Key Takeaways

What you'll learn from this article

  • 1The FMGE will be held on a more frequent basis with the revised schedule.
  • 2Eligible candidates get a head start with an October session added.
  • 3Winter session has been postponed.
  • 4Eligibility depends on nationality, medical qualification and applicable documentation.
  • 5Always use official notice for final application instructions.

If you have followed the recent protests by Foreign Medical Graduates and Indian Medical Graduates regarding the FMGE examination and its results, you already know how strongly candidates pushed for changes.
Following direct negotiations with candidate representatives, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) agreed to run the exam three times a year rather than two.

To launch this revamped schedule, an extra sitting has been slotted for October 31, 2026. Anyone aiming for this date needs to move quickly: the application window is live right now and closes strictly at 11:55 PM on September 25, 2026.

Crucially, don't mix up this added October test with the upcoming FMGE 2027 winter session.

The exam originally pencilled in for January 9, 2027, has been officially postponed, making this October drive a separate, stand-alone chance to clear the boards.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. FMGE 2027 registration will commence from when?
NBEMS has not yet released the official registration date for the January/February 2027 FMGE session. Earlier, the board had postponed the examination date and said that the amended examination will be held in January or February 2027. Candidates should not assume a registration date or application deadline until the official Information Bulletin is published.
2. FMGE 2027 exam date?
The examination initially scheduled on January 9, 2027 has been postponed. NBEMS has verified that the examination would be held on a later date in January or February 2027 but the precise date is yet to be determined. Candidates are consequently advised to treat unofficial dates provided on coaching, preparatory or education websites as unconfirmed dates.
3. FMGE is now thrice a year?
Yes. NBEMS has declared that FMGE will be held thrice a year instead of the former schedule of twice a year. One additional test was added for October 2026. This is after conversations with representatives of protesting foreign medical graduates and provides another option for eligible candidates to take the screening test.
4. FMGE October 2026 last date for application?
The deadline for applications for the additional session of October 2026 is September 25, 2026, 11:55 PM. Date of Examination: 31st October, 2026. The dates listed are for the October 2026 session and should not be confused with the application calendar for the January/February 2027 session which has not yet been announced.
5. What is FMGE Eligibility Criteria?
In general, FMGE is open to Indian residents and Overseas residents of India who have received a primary medical qualification from a medical institution outside India and such qualification is recognized, subject to applicable rules. They may also need to get an NMC Eligibility Certificate, depending upon the time and rules under which the candidates entered their overseas medical training. Always refer to the Information Bulletin for the specific session.
6. Is FMGE Eligibility Certificate required?
Some candidates need to have an Eligibility Certificate from the National Medical Commission before applying for the FMGE screening test. The NMC has warned candidates needing the certificate not to apply for the screening test without it. Do I need one? This depends on the regulations you are subject to and your conditions of admission – check your own status with NMC.
7. How many questions are asked in FMGE?
FMGE current pattern includes 300 multiple choice questions in two sections of 150 questions each. The examination is in a computer based structure and the examination medium is English. 1 mark will be awarded for each correct response. At the moment, there is no negative grading for wrong answers.
8. What is the FMGE cut-off mark?
As per the present examination pattern, the students have to get a minimum of 150 marks out of 300 to get qualified. There is no negative marking in the examination till now. As NBEMS conducts the examination scheme and issues the instructions relevant for each examination cycle, candidates should continue to follow the Information Bulletin of their respective session.
9. If I failed in the last attempt, can I apply for FMGE 2027?
An unsuccessful application in the past does not preclude an otherwise eligible person from reapplying. FMGE is a qualifying screening test and the applicant can reappear as per the applicable criteria till he/she qualifies. But you have to qualify and apply for the session.
10. Where can I get the FMGE 2027 registration dates?
FMGE registration 2027, the official NBEMS website and its FMGE examination page is the safest source. NBEMS issues Information Bulletin, application link, examination notices and other official information there. You should also monitor the National Medical Commission website for any revisions about the regulations or Eligibility Certificate. Do not take the dates expected by third party websites as final until NBEMS confirms them.
