Below the listings you will find the registration pathway, typical salaries, the cities that hire most, and answers to the questions overseas pharmacists ask before they apply.
Types of Pharmacy Jobs in Australia
Pharmacist jobs in Australia fall into a few main groups. Most overseas pharmacists start in community pharmacy or as an intern pharmacist, then move into hospital, clinical or specialist roles with experience.
- Community (retail) pharmacist: Dispensing, medicine reviews, vaccinations and patient counselling in chain and independent pharmacies such as Priceline, Chemist Warehouse and Terry White. The largest source of pharmacist vacancies.
- Hospital pharmacist: Medication supply, ward-based clinical pharmacy and medicines information in public and private hospitals. Roles are graded, so pay and responsibility rise with experience.
- Intern pharmacist: The supervised, paid internship every overseas pharmacist completes after passing the OPRA exam, usually in community pharmacy but sometimes in a hospital.
- Clinical and aged care pharmacist: Medication management reviews and on-site pharmacist roles in residential aged care, as well as clinical roles in health services and primary care.
- Locum pharmacist: Short-term cover for pharmacies, popular with experienced pharmacists who want flexible hours or rural work.
- Industry, regulatory and medical affairs: Pharmaceutical company roles in regulatory affairs, pharmacovigilance and medical information for pharmacists who prefer a non-dispensing career.
Pharmacist Jobs in Australia by City
Where you live affects the type of work available. These are the markets overseas pharmacists search most.
- Pharmacist jobs in Melbourne: Victoria has a large community pharmacy market and a big public hospital network, so Melbourne is one of the biggest markets for pharmacist vacancies.
- Pharmacist jobs in Sydney: New South Wales has a very large number of pharmacies, major teaching hospitals and a strong pharmaceutical industry presence.
- Pharmacist jobs in Brisbane: Queensland combines a growing city market with regional and rural demand, where employers often offer extra incentives to attract pharmacists.
- Pharmacist jobs in Perth: Western Australia has steady demand in both the metropolitan area and remote regions, with public health roles advertised through the state health service.
- Pharmacist jobs in Adelaide: South Australia hires through SA Health and a network of community pharmacies, and tends to have a lower cost of living than Sydney or Melbourne.
How Overseas Pharmacists Register to Work in Australia
To work as a pharmacist in Australia you must be registered with the Pharmacy Board of Australia through AHPRA. For pharmacists who trained outside Australia, the pathway has six stages:
- Initial skills assessment: Submit your degree, transcripts and home-country registration to the Australian Pharmacy Council (APC). Your B.Pharm or PharmD is checked and your eligibility confirmed.
- OPRA exam: The Overseas Pharmacist Readiness Assessment is a computer-based exam of 120 multiple-choice questions in 2.5 hours, held three times a year (March, July and November). A pass is valid for six years.
- English language test: Accepted tests include IELTS Academic (7.0 in each component, 6.5 in Writing), OET (B in Reading, Listening and Speaking, C+ in Writing) and PTE Academic (66 in Reading, Listening and Speaking, 56 in Writing).
- Provisional registration and internship: After the exam you apply for provisional registration and start a paid pharmacy internship of 1,575 hours, about a year, under supervision. Many internships come with employer visa sponsorship.
- Intern written and oral exams: Once you have completed 75% of your internship hours you sit the intern written and oral examinations, which test clinical decision-making and communication.
- General registration: Apply for general registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia and practise independently as a registered pharmacist anywhere in Australia.
Fees, exam dates and score requirements change. Always confirm the current details with the Australian Pharmacy Council and AHPRA before you apply.
Pharmacist Salary in Australia
Registered pharmacists in Australia typically earn in the range of AUD 90,000 to 110,000 a year, which is roughly ₹58 to 71 lakh at current exchange rates. Actual pay depends on the state, whether the role is community or hospital, years of experience, and weekend or after-hours penalty rates.
Intern pharmacists are paid at a lower rate while they complete the supervised year. The figure above is a general guide and not a guaranteed offer, so check the salary on each job listing.
Visa Sponsorship for Pharmacist Jobs in Australia
Pharmacy is a skilled occupation in Australia, and some employers sponsor overseas pharmacists, particularly for internships and for hard-to-fill regional roles. Sponsorship is never automatic. It depends on the employer, the location and your visa category, so read each listing carefully and ask the employer directly.
Pharmacists who already hold the right to work in Australia, such as permanent residents and citizens, can usually apply for any role once they have general registration.
